The developmental capacity of nuclei taken from differentiating endoderm cells of Xenopus laevis.

چکیده
A N important question concerning embryonic differentiation is whether the nuclei of somatic cells in different parts of an embryo come to differ genetically from each other during development. It has become possible to investigate this matter since King & Briggs (1955) have shown that nuclear transplantation is a satisfactory technique for testing the developmental potentialities of embryonic nuclei. These authors (1957, 1960) have used Rana pipiens for transplantation experiments with endoderm nuclei, and have found that these nuclei become progressively limited in their developmental capacity after the late blastula stage. This paper describes some similar experiments carried out with endoderm nuclei of Xenopus laevis. The general conclusion that nuclei change as development proceeds is confirmed; there are, however, considerable differences between Rana and Xenopus in the rate and time of onset of nuclear changes. These differences make it easier to understand the significance of nuclear differentiation during embryonic development.

The developmental capacity of nuclei taken from intestinal epithelium cells of feeding tadpoles.
INTRODUCTION A N important problem in embryology is whether the differentiation of cells depends upon a stable restriction of the genetic information contained in their nuclei. The technique of nuclear transplantation has shown to what extent the nuclei of differentiating cells can promote the formation of different cell types (e.g. King & Briggs, 1956; Gurdon, 1960c). Yet no experiments have s...

The technique of nuclear transplantation has been used to investigate the question whether somatic cell nuclei undergo changes in the course of embryonic differentiation (King and Briggs, 1955; Briggs and King, 1960; Fischberg et al., 1958; Gurdon, 196Oc). Such changes may affect those constituents of a nucleus which are required for embryonic development, and changes of this kind can be discov...
متن کاملNuclear transplantation from intestinal epithelial cells of early and late Xenopus laevis tadpoles.
The aim of these experiments was to test whether the developmental potential of nuclei from intestinal epithelial cells of Xenopus laevis tadpoles declined during the life of the functional larval gut. The results of transplantation of nuclei from three different stages of development were compared: stages 46-48, when feeding begins and while yolk is still present but before the formation of th...
متن کاملExpression of hsp90 Alpha and hsp90 Beta during Xenopus laevis Embryonic Development
Background: Members of the eukaryotic Hsp90 family function as important molecular chaperones in the assembly, folding and activation of cellular signaling in development. Two hsp90 genes, hsp90 alpha and hsp90 beta, have been identified in fish and homeothermic vertebrates but not in poikilothermic vertebrates. In the present study, the expression of hsp90 alpha and hsp90 beta genes in Xenopus...
متن کاملNutritional endoderm in a direct developing frog: a potential parallel to the evolution of the amniote egg.
The egg of the direct-developing frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui, has 20 x the volume as that of the model amphibian, Xenopus laevis. Increased egg size led to the origin of nutritional endoderm, a novel cell type that provides nutrition but does not differentiate into digestive tract tissues. As the E. coqui endoderm develops, a distinct boundary exists between differentiating intestinal cells a...
